‘Head in the sand’ syndrome

Vulnerable and at risk

The Legal Services Board, oversight regulator of legal provision in England and Wales, acknowledge that there remains a huge national need for both legal education and preventative legal provision nationwide.

Research conducted by Anne Barlow, professor of Family Law and Policy at the University of Exeter, found that nearly 50% of people believe the myth that ‘common law spouse’ status exists and has the same legal rights as married and civil partnership couples. A reliance on falsehoods can be a costly error, which may be ruinous to family and finances.

Peoples’ ignorance of the consequences if the unexpected happens without legal provision in place is disturbingly common. Approximately 65% of the population have no Will for example, and yet many have life insurance.

When does life insurance pay out?         When do you need a Will?

Having one without the other makes no sense and leaves individuals and their families unknowingly vulnerable and at risk. Unexpected disability, loss of mental capacity and relationship breakdown are further examples of events where many people are unaware of the consequences from lack of legal provision.
